When used properly, natural gas is a safe and reliable fuel. Be sure
that you and your family know how to stay safe:
Natural gas is odorless and colorless, so a harmless substance is added
to give it a “rotten egg†smell. If you smell that odor leave the premises
immediately. Do not strike a match, turn on a flashlight, use telephones,
or switch appliances or lights on or off – they can all cause sparks. If
the odor is faint, then open windows before leaving.
Report gas leaks to Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).
Make the call away from the location of the leak. (Brooklyn, Staten Island,
and Queens gas customers, served by KeySpan, should report gas leaks
to 1-718-643-4050.)
Let the gas company know, where you will wait for their filed team.
It should be at a location that is in the vicinity of the suspected gas
leak. Their field team must have access to the premises. If no one is
present, the police or fire department will be contacted to give the
team access.
